Thumbnails are public assets served by YouTube. Using them for personal reference, previews, or reaction videos is common - always credit the original creator if you republish.

Why is maxresdefault missing sometimes?

Not every video gets a 1280×720 version generated - usually because it was uploaded before HD or the creator's channel is small. Fall back to sddefault or hqdefault.

Does it work for Shorts and Live streams?

Yes. All standard YouTube URLs (including youtu.be, Shorts, and live) point at the same thumbnail set.

Do you store the URL or the video ID?

No. The video ID is parsed in your browser and used to build image URLs directly from ytimg.com. Nothing is logged.
