The four aspect ratios that cover 95% of social

Before the size tables, the ratios you'll actually use:

  • 9:16 - vertical, mobile-first. TikTok, Reels, Shorts, Stories.
  • 1:1 - square. Instagram feed's oldest ratio, still widely posted.
  • 4:5 - portrait. Instagram feed's most-used ratio now (more screen real estate than 1:1).
  • 16:9 - landscape. YouTube videos, X cards, LinkedIn shares, blog headers.

Two lesser but common:

  • 1.91:1 - X card, LinkedIn share, Facebook link preview (~1200ร—628).
  • 21:9 - ultrawide cinematic. Used for scroll-stopping YouTube thumbnails and hero images.

Aspect Ratio Calculator covers all of these plus a bunch more with one-click presets.

Instagram (2026)

  • Feed square - 1080 ร— 1080 (1:1)
  • Feed portrait - 1080 ร— 1350 (4:5) - the current default; gets the most feed height.
  • Feed landscape - 1080 ร— 566 (1.91:1) - rarely used; loses feed real estate.
  • Story / Reel - 1080 ร— 1920 (9:16)
  • Profile picture - 320 ร— 320 minimum (displayed circular).

TikTok

  • Video - 1080 ร— 1920 (9:16). TikTok compresses aggressively - start with the highest quality your camera produces.
  • Profile picture - 200 ร— 200 minimum.

YouTube

  • Video - 1920 ร— 1080 (16:9) for standard, 1080 ร— 1920 (9:16) for Shorts.
  • Thumbnail - 1280 ร— 720 (16:9). Under 2MB. JPG or PNG.
  • Channel banner - 2560 ร— 1440. Safe area for logo: 1546 ร— 423 center.
  • Profile picture - 800 ร— 800.

Grabbing an existing thumbnail: YouTube Thumbnail Downloader pulls every resolution YouTube stores (default, medium, high, standard, maxres).

X (Twitter)

  • Post image, single - 1600 ร— 900 (16:9) - displays at 1200ร—675 in feed.
  • Post image, 2-image layout - 700 ร— 800 each (side-by-side).
  • Post image, 3+ layout - 1200 ร— 686 each.
  • Video - up to 1920 ร— 1200. 16:9 or 1:1 are the safe defaults.
  • Header - 1500 ร— 500.
  • Profile picture - 400 ร— 400.

LinkedIn

  • Personal post image - 1200 ร— 627 (1.91:1) for shared links; 1200 ร— 1200 for square feed images.
  • Company page cover - 1128 ร— 191.
  • Personal profile background - 1584 ร— 396.
  • Article header - 1200 ร— 627.
  • Profile picture - 400 ร— 400.

Facebook

  • Post image - 1200 ร— 630 (1.91:1) - same as an OG image.
  • Cover photo - 820 ร— 312 desktop, 640 ร— 360 mobile. Design the safe area accordingly.
  • Story - 1080 ร— 1920.
  • Profile picture - 320 ร— 320.

Pinterest

  • Pin image - 1000 ร— 1500 (2:3). Vertical pins massively outperform square or landscape.
  • Board cover - 217 ร— 147.
  • Profile picture - 165 ร— 165.

Discord

  • Server icon - 512 ร— 512.
  • Server banner - 960 ร— 540 minimum.
  • Emoji - 128 ร— 128 (uploaded); displayed at 32ร—32 or 22ร—22.
  • Profile banner (Nitro) - 600 ร— 240.

The OG image (used by Facebook, LinkedIn, iMessage, Slack, Discord)

  • 1200 ร— 630 - the safest single OG image size. Every social platform that renders link previews uses this ratio.

The workflow

Two tools handle everything above:

  • Image Resizer - with one-click presets for the sizes above (Instagram square, IG story, YouTube thumbnail, X card, LinkedIn banner, Facebook cover).
  • Aspect Ratio Calculator - when you know one dimension and need the other; also verifies the reduced ratio (spot the "why does this crop weird" bug).

After resizing, compress to keep uploads fast: Image Compressor at WebP quality 78 typically produces files 60% smaller than the JPG the resizer emitted, with no visible quality difference.

Video export sizes for the same platforms

Since aspect ratio calculators only handle dimensions and not codec: for video, MP4 (H.264 + AAC) is universal; WebM is fine everywhere except a few older cameras. Frame rate: 30fps unless you deliberately need 60 (gameplay, sports). Bitrate: YouTube and TikTok re-encode aggressively, so start high (10-20 Mbps for 1080p) and let their servers downsize.

Every size, one bookmark

The two most-reached-for tools for this workflow live at:

Bookmark both. When Instagram or TikTok changes a spec (they do, quietly, every few months), the presets in these tools stay current - and worst case, you enter the new number manually in one field and get the matching dimension in the other.
